What each quote should include
An hourly quote charges according to documented time rules, while a flat-rate quote states an amount for a defined scope. The useful comparison is not the headline rate; it is what work, time and potential adjustments the written quote covers. For an hourly quote, identify the crew size, hourly rate, billing increments, minimum hours, when the clock starts and stops, and how travel, truck use, fuel, equipment or materials are treated. Ask whether packing, disassembly, reassembly and handling of listed specialty items are included or separately authorized. For a flat-rate quote, confirm the inventory, addresses, requested services, access assumptions and conditions that permit a price adjustment. Determine what happens if the inventory grows, an elevator is unavailable, the carry distance changes or the move requires additional work. Both quote types should address valuation, payment timing, cancellation or postponement terms, and any storage or delivery uncertainty. Valuation defines contractual liability for loss or damage and is not necessarily an insurance policy.
Travel time, minimums and access charges
Minimum-hour rules can make a short move cost more than a simple rate-times-hours calculation suggests. Ask whether the minimum applies to labor alone or also incorporates travel and other charges.
